and
we
review
cases
to
determine
what
appropriate
steps
should
be
taken

Several types of questions are received via the helpline:
- filing a beneficiary complaint about the quality of health care received while the beneficiary was a patient in a hospital, nursing home, home health agency, or an emergency room;
- filing a complaint about the quality of care received from an HMO;
- asking questions about hospital and outpatient services and billing;
- appealing a denial of payment on a Medicare bill;
- asking questions about durable medical equipment (DME) such as wheelchairs, oxygen, and diabetic supplies;
- reporting alleged Medicare billing fraud;
- requesting information about Medicare HMOs and other supplemental insurance plans;
- replacing a lost Medicare card;
- asking questions about Medicare coverage of procedures or services;
- appealing a hospital discharge decision when the beneficiary or a family member disagrees;
- asking about enrolling in Medicare;
- and questions about Social security, Medicaid, and other topics.
LHCR is responsible for reviewing medical quality of care concerns for Medicare beneficiaries. However, helpline staff members are able to refer other calls to appropriate agencies.
