Heart failure is a common disease in patients over the age of 65, and it affects nearly 5 million Americans. It is the only major cardiovascular disorder on the rise. Less than 50 percent of patients are alive five years after their initial diagnosis and less than 25 percent are alive at ten years.1 Heart failure is the most common Medicare diagnosis-related group, and more Medicare dollars are spent for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure than for any other diagnosis.2    (View Footnotes)
